Idaho's Nursery and Landscape
Industry
|
A 2005 study by the
University
of
Idaho Social Science Research Unit
estimated that the Idaho Green Industry contributed more than
$834 million to the state economy during 2004, a 26% increase in
the five years since the previous survey in 1999. (The
Green Industry of Idaho in 2004,
University
of
Idaho Social Science Research Unit
, SSRU report 05-02-02, June 2006).
These
contributions included approximately
$258 million by wholesale nurseries, $103 million by retail
nurseries, $339 million in landscape installation and
maintenance, $43 million in greenhouse sales, $12 million by
florists and interior landscapers, and nearly $9 million by
arborists and tree care professionals. At peak season, the
industry employed an estimated 14, 478 people. The industry also
shows stability, with 76% of the survey respondents having been
in business for five years or more.
Idaho's green industry is large and growing. Given the rapid
influx of new residents and increasing affluence of
Idaho's citizens, further growth of the industry seems inevitable. A
key factor in maintaining a healthy and growing industry is
timely access to the latest research-based technical
information.
