confluence of the Snake and Clearwater rivers in north central
Idaho. The fertile, high-yielding cropland is well-known throughout
the state and nation. The population of Lewiston is 30,904 and Nez
Perce County has 37,410 residents. The University of Idaho is
located in Moscow, 32 miles north of Lewiston, and Washington State
University, another land-grant university, is located in Pullman,
Washington, eight miles west of Moscow. Lewiston is Idaho's only
seaport. Barges laden with grain or wood can be found on the river
slowly transporting their cargo to the Pacific coast. The county has
546,600 acres in area with 339,476 acres in farmland. The primary
agricultural commodities of the county include soft white winter wheat, winter and
spring barley, dry edible peas, canola, and lentils. Gross agricultural
sales for the county in 1997 was 37.8 million, which does not
include income from forestry, horticulture, nursery, and related
production. Over 120,000 acres are non-industrial, private woodland.
