Lemhi County > 4-H and Youth

Lemhi County 4-H

There are over 7 million 4-Hers in the United States alone, making 4-H the largest out-of-school youth program. Youth ages 8 to 18 can participate in the 4H program. 4-H is part of the extension system, a non-profit program operated through the land grant university. The extension system’s staff operate 4-H offices throughout the counties of each state.

In 4-H, youth learn life skills they will benefit from forever. Most 4-H programs center around three areas, Leadership, citizenship, and life skills.

Traditional Projects

Traditional 4-H projects require a commitment from the club leader, youth and their parents. The projects require time and patience and are always fun. Requirements include the filling out of a record book, a community service project, meeting attendance and completion of project. The project will then be entered and judged at the fair. There are unlimited choices for topics as well.

Project Camp

Project Camp is unique 4-H experience. What used to take an entire summer to complete a project has been developed to be completed in four days. The 5 day event includes classes with your project leaders, a organizational club meeting, a fund raiser, a community service project and a fair at the end to display all the youth’s hard work.

Projects in a Day

4-H day camps are designed similarly to project camp but each project is completed in one day. The youth must belong to a organizational club to enroll in the day camps.  The day camps give first year youth an opportunity to try a new project. Although not as in depth as a traditional project they are still good fun!

Clubs & Projects

Each youth, when they enroll in 4-H need to choose a project to participate in. The project they choose should be something they find interesting. Along with the project a 4-Her has other responsibilities. These include :

· attending project meetings with other youth in your project

· joining and attending organizational club meetings that are a group of youth in different projects but from the same area

· performing a community service with your organizational club

· doing fundraisers and having a party with your organizational club

· completing a record book,

· giving a demonstration and

· attending the county fair.
