What do Master Gardeners do?
The
Master Gardeners' mission is to assist and teach community members about gardening in Latah County.
Their most important function is to staff the "plant
clinic" which provides answers to horticulture problems,
whether caused by disease, insects, etc., and offer
research-based recommendations, that include biological control,
cultural control, and chemical control, as applicable.
How can I become a Master Gardener?
The Extension Office offers annual training, beginning in
January and into mid-May. The training is once a week for
3 hours. Certification is dependant upon attendance of
classes, and 40 hours of volunteer time within the calendar
year, as approved by the Master Gardener Program
Coordinator. (Thereafter, to maintain
certification status, there is an ongoing annual commitment
totaling 30 hours volunteer time, as approved by the
Coordinator.)
What if I only want the training, and don't want to
volunteer?
While the emphasis of the program is for training volunteers,
personal growth and education is important. Students are
welcome to learn from the experts. However, to encourage
participation and completion the volunteer requirements,
those students who do complete the program, will be eligible for
a refund of $100. Currently tuition is $150.
Where is the Plant Clinic?
The Plant Clinic is located in the
Extension Office, Room 208 of the Latah County Courthouse, 522 South
Adams, in Moscow, Idaho. Plant Clinic is open every Tuesday
and Thursday
during the gardening season from 9 a.m. until noon. At that
time, Master Gardeners are available to help answer your questions
and examine plant or
insect specimens, though questions may be submitted to Extension
staff during regular office hours.
How long do I have to wait to get answers to
plant/insect problem(s)?
We may
not always be able to give you
an answer right
on the spot (even we get stumped sometimes!) but your question will
be researched and an answer sent back to you as soon as we
can. (At times, we utilize the expertise of the scientists and
researchers on the University of Idaho.)
Is there a cost?
This service is free of
charge!
