Kootenai County Extension Nutrition Program

Idaho’s Food Stamp Nutrition Education Program

ENP is a community-based education program that teaches limited resource individuals how to stretch their food dollars to provide healthy, low-cost meals for their families.  ENP strives to link food security with healthy eating habits.  The District 1 program encompasses 10 Northern Idaho counties which include Boundary, Bonner, Benewah, Kootenai, Shoshone, Latah, Nez Perce, Lewis, Clearwater, and Idaho.

Kali Gardiner, Program Coordinator
Shelly Johnson, Program Administrator

The Extension Nutrition Program is funded through the USDA Food and Nutrition Services and the University of Idaho in cooperation with the Idaho Food Stamp Program, Department of Health and Welfare.
ENP Nutrition Advisors teach group and one-on-one education lessons to adults and children.  The lessons cover basic nutrition, stretching the food dollar, food resource management, and food safety. Clients are recipients of food stamps or those eligible to receive food stamps.

The UI Senior Extension Nutrition Program is funded by Area Agency on Aging, "a non-profit agency funded through federal, state, and private sources".  The program "emphasizes the basics - the importance of a healthy diet to long-term health, meal planning, quick and low-cost meal preparation, and the benefits of eating fruits, vegetables, and whole-grains".
