What is Extension Community Development?

The purpose of the University of Idaho Extension Community Development program is to improve the quality of life in Idaho’s communities. Our Community Development program focuses on creating sustainable social and economic systems in Idaho by

  • building social and human capital,
  • creating partnerships, and
  • increasing community access to resources.

Community Development programming is divided into 3 overlapping areas:

Social & Organizational Infrastructure includes leadership systems, educational opportunities & resources, workforce training, and access to medical and social services.

Economic Infrastructure enables a sustainable quality of life consistent with resource constraints, community goals, living standards, expectations, and aspirations.

Physical Infrastructure includes transportation systems, healthcare facilities, housing, public facilities, sewer & water, and telecom/technology transfer systems.

University of Idaho Extension has four Community Development Focus Groups that reflect the programming areas above. Click the links below for more information about each group.
