The Master Gardener Program is one way your Cooperative Extension System supports their motto of "people helping people."
The program provides gardeners with an intensive education in horticultural principles. In exchange for this training, participants return volunteer time to their community.
Classes are taught by University of Idaho Extension Agents and Specialists, local experts, and other Master Gardeners. At least 30 hours of class time are required.
Short quizzes and a final exam are given on the material covered in class.
Master Gardeners must complete a 30 hour volunteer commitment. This commitment may be fulfilled in a variety of ways. A few examples are:
| Giving horticultural workshops | |
| Community beautification projects | |
| Writing newspaper articles | |
| Becoming a 4-H leader | |
|
Making 'garden calls" | |
|
Gardening booth at county fair |
Each Master Gardener's specific interests and skills are considered when planning volunteer projects.
Anyone with an interest in gardening can become a Master Gardener. No prior training or experience in horticulture is necessary. You must be interested in improving your own skills and knowledge, and be willing to share that knowledge with others.
For more information on becoming a Master Gardener contact the Butte County Extension Office at 527-8587 or send an email butte@uidaho.edu
