 Learning the Fun Way

Even though the kids are not in school, it does not mean that the learning has to stop. People learn in many different ways and all learning does not have to come from a book. Hands-on learning is fun way to learn about the world and that is the purpose of 4-H. The 4-H program does include some reading, but the majority of the learning in 4-H is done with a hands on  approach. There is a lot to learn about the world and the 4-H program has fun ways to learn about it. 4-H members can learn to cook, survive in the wilderness, raise livestock, craft, sew and various other things during their summer break. So do not let the learning stop even though there is not school.

The Groovy 60’s

This is the theme for 4-H camp this year and it will be lots of fun. 4-H camp will include campfire activities, crafts, pellet guns, archery, a nature hike, and a dance on the last night.  4-H camp is held in Alpine, Wyoming at the 4-H camp there.  The cost for camp this year is $60 and that includes  meals, lodging and craft supplies. Thanks to the generosity of the Thompson Creek Mine, the campers will not have to pay to ride the Butte High School trip bus to camp. The bus will leave on the morning of June 4 at 9 am  and return on the afternoon of Saturday, June 7 around 2 pm.  Butte County 4-H attends camp with Clark, Fremont and Onieda county. This camp is great fun and for any youth that was 8 years old by January 1, 2008.

There are limited scholarships available through the Butte County 4-H Leader’s Council, but they need to be in the Butte County Extension Office no later that May 24th at 5 pm. These are $30 scholarships and the winners will be notified on May 25th.

Teen Conference

This year Teen Conference will be June 9th through 13th in Moscow on the campus of the University of Idaho.  This is an outstanding conference for youth that have completed the 8th grade through seniors in High School. There are opportunities to meet other teens from other parts of the state along with chances to develop leadership skills and participate in other hands on learning experiences. Registration materials included with this newsletter. Late registrations will be accepted. There will be $50 fee for transportation.

4-H Members Basics

4-H members must be 8 years old before January before January 1, 2008. The registration for 4-H is $6.25 unless you are participating in the horse program, and then the fee is $9.00 for each member and there is not a limit on how many projects that they participate in.

Each project that the 4-H participates in will have a record book of some sort, they will need to do a demonstration for each project, and then the project must be put on public display, such as the Butte County Fair or a library or a school.

 Fee Break down:

$5.00 goes to 4-H council to support events and purchase materials

$1 insurance for non-horse project youth

$2 for youth participating in the horse program.

$1.75 for horse youth member dues for district and state horse council.

$.25 for each member to participate in the 4h for me program provided by the State 4-H Office.

4-H Insurance

This fee has been added to the registration fee this year as a standard fee to protect the 4-H member. This is for something that might happen while the 4-H member is participating in a 4-H meeting or event. This insurance has always been optional, but the University of Idaho is highly recommending it and will soon be required.  Due to the higher risk with the horse project, the fee for this is higher.
