Benewah County > Youth Development

Youth Development

Traditional-

There are currently 16 4-H clubs that are open to the youth of Benewah county and approximately 32 leaders that are providing leadership within these clubs.

Projects ranging from cooking to breeding sheep, there is something for everyone. Some of the newer projects available to youth are computer and theatre arts, as well as specialty breads.

School Enrichment-

“Germ City” –the hand washing program geared to elementary age children- is again traveling to the Upriver Elementary School in Fernwood, Lakeside Elementary in Worley, and Coeur d'Alene Tribal School.  Germ City shares the importance of hand washing and to talk about germs and how germs are spread using hands-on activities. By using a special “Germ City lotion” and an enclosed black lighted Germ City tunnel, youth are able to see the pretend germs and practice the hand washing skills as instructed during the lesson. Children are then able to return to the Germ City unit to see how well they removed the pretend germs and to see what areas  on there hands need more attention when washing their hands.  A research study done in an elementary school in Detroit showed that students that were asked to wash their hand four times each day at planned times: arriving at school, after recess, before lunch, & before leaving school. Children washing at scheduled times had 24% fewer sick days from respiratory illness & 51% fewer days lost from stomach upset than children in classrooms without planned hand washing.

Talking With T.J.- is a 6 session that teaches teamwork skills by using video segments, games involving teamwork, power phrases and teamwork tips that encourage youth to work cooperatively. Harrison Elementary 2nd grade class is currently participating in this program.

Nutrition Expedition- Basic nutritional classes are being taught to the Harrison Elementary 2nd grade class. Youth have been learning about the food groups and the USDA My Pyramid through the National Dairy Council's Little D's Nutrition Expedition program. Youth are introduced to the Royal Food Family through stories and activities.

Other School Enrichment opportunities

What’s A Tree To Me- Students explore the life cycle of a tree. Air, water, soil and plant life relationships are acted out. Life-size models illustrate the need for trees, increasing students’ awareness of environment and plant science.

Pyramid Stars- Students discover the nutrition that a body needs to stay healthy. Life size food models help children learn to classify hundreds of foods. The six food groups come to life as students build a colossal food pyramid. Students weigh and measure servings and team up to make a snack.

Wally Otters’s Blue Thumb- “Wally Otter” introduces the importance of water stewardship to children. The students build an aquifer and design their own water filters. A game to dispose of life-size household hazardous wastes models helps children identify poor habits.
